In 1976, during our country's bicentennial, I had the good fortune to be boatswain's mate aboard the Coast Guard's square-rigged sailing vessel, The Eagle. We were touring the east coast, and in every port were drawing huge crowds of people and media interested in this amazing tallship.
Many of nation's best photographers sailed with us for days and that gave me the opportunity to ask these folks about getting into the business. Somewhere during that summer's cruise, I decided that I would enroll in photography school after leaving the Coast Guard in the fall.
Years later, I have no regrets. Photography has given me a myriad of experiences that I never would have had and allowed me to travel to places I never would have gone. From heads of corporations to heads of universities; from great athletes to the Great Wall, I have met more people and seen more of the world than I would ever have dreamed. Despite all that, my perfect assignment remains simple: because I love meeting people and seeing what they do for a living, a series of portraits, telling the story of real people in their real environment, is still my favorite project.
Today, I live in Needham, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, with my wife, Reenie - my sweetheart since those Coast Guard days. We have two boys - both in college. (So, I hope you'll call early and often with assignments!)
